A warning today for windows (XP & Vista) users of a new computer system worm that uses instant messenger applications (such as Windows Messenger) to infect computers. The worm known as W32/Impard-A is similar to other in that it is capable of storing itself; in this case as a zip filenamed “C:RECYCLERmyphoto.zip” which contains a file called IMG009.jpg-www.imagehosting.com. The worm sends a message via the instant messaging software offering the user some pictures in an attempt to initiate downloading of the file. Once the worm has installed on the computer it then searches for bittorrent.exe in an attempt to utilize this program to spread itself via the BitTorrent connection to other computers connected to the torrent. It is advisable for all windows users to maintain up-to-date /malware detection software on their personal computer and also be vigilant as to any suspicious instant messenger image file download offer.
