Scientists have discovered a gene that appears to predispose children to asthma and raises the risk of developing the disease up to 70%.
With 1 in 10 British children suffering from the illness is rapidly growing among the infant population and the discovery of the gene is an exciting development in the bid to develop a cure.
Although having the gene makes it more likely that a person will develop asthma the triggers for an attack are largely environmental factors such as dust, pet hair, smoking, mites and chemicals.
It is hoped that with further study and medical advances a viable drug based will not be too far off.
