With more US cities introducing tighter smoking bans in public areas including beaches, outdoor dining areas and parks the pressure and even the rewards for quitting smoking are greater than ever before. Los Angeles is one county that has embraced a new smoke free policy for many public areas including beaches. The beach is a major summer entertainment venue and with up to 80% of the Los Angeles County coastline prohibiting smoking it is clear smokers will face significant restrictions on their summer beach activities.
Many other popular outdoor activities such as alfresco dining, hiking, major sports and biking all take place in public areas of which many have considerable restrictions with regard to smoking. It is clear that state and county health departments are now taking their public health responsibility seriously with regard to passive smoking in all public areas.
If the reduced chances of cancer related death for smokers who kick the habit isn’t enough of an incentive now there is an added reward for quitting smoking in the form of greater freedoms when venturing into public areas. Adding to the current round of smoking restrictions in public areas is the reality that such restrictions are sure to become tighter as time passes to a point where smoking is banned in all public areas in the not too distant future.
