The discovery of a cardiovascular system damaging enzyme could have the potential to warn healthy people if they are at risk of . The protein based enzyme known as Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is released by white blood cells and appears to disable protective substances in the blood along with inflaming arteries.
Studies have found heart disease patients and patients suffering chest pain to have elevated levels of MPO. Surprisingly the levels of MPO were also increased for a number of years prior to a cardiovascular event. It is hoped that this research will enable early detection of the enzyme will lead to a simple blood test to alert people to their higher risk of developing heart disease and the ability for those people to make changes in their lifestyle as a preventative measure thus greatly reducing their risk by that has already developed within the body.
