In a city that is constantly regenerating, sustainability has become a key theme in Brighton. From the eco-friendly Jubilee Library, in the city's Cultural Quarter, which recently won its first sustainability award in the Observer's Ethical Awards, to Earthship Brighton, a solar powered, self-sufficient, eco friendly building built from used tyres, designed to reduce our impact on the planet, Brighton is really making its mark on all areas of social, environmental and economic sustainability.

Brighton’s transport system has also gone green. Its highly efficient and award winning bus service, has all latest vehicles designed so that they feature the lowest emission diesel engines in the world. Brighton's De Vere Grand, a popular choice as both a conference venue and a luxury hotel stay for conference delegates and chosen by the Lib Dems for its 07 conference, was recently named the greenest of hotels selected by the 4 major political parties.
The news, which further cements Brighton's green reputation, came following a survey by Royal & Sun Alliance insurance, which used pictures taken by thermal imaging cameras to measure heat lost on the chosen conference venues.
The most energy-efficient of the four was the De Vere Grand, Brighton, followed by Labour's choice, the Bournemouth International Centre in second, the Green Party's favourites, the Cornerstone, Liverpool in third and finally the Conservative choice, the Winter Gardens, Blackpool in last place.
Go local and organic
Many hotels and award winning restaurants are also starting to source produce from local farms or offering customers organic fare, offering conference delegates the opportunity to eat great food in a responsible way. From the award winning vegetarian restaurant Terre a Terre, who source a lot of food locally, a lot of it organic to Brighton hotels such as the Avalon, which uses energy saving bulbs, water saving devices and food sourced from a local farm, the city truly offers conference business visitors the chance to ‘go green’.
Conference after hours
And after the hustle and bustle of a meeting or conference, after hours can be green in Brighton too. Recently awarded Blue Flag status in recognition of cleanliness and water quality, there's never been a better time to take a dip in the sea!
