You are considered obese if your body mass index (BMI) is more than 30. People with normal weight would have a body mass index in the range of 18.5 to 24.9. Anything above this value up to the value of 29.9 is considered as overweight.

It is better to start working on reducing your weight when you are considered as overweight then wait until you become obese. The sooner you lose the weight the easier it will come off. Another easy way to identify whether you are obese is to find out your normal recommended weight for your age and height. Check the current weight. If your current weight is more than normal the recommended weight by 20%, then you are considered as obese. Searching online for height and weight charts is easy and will give you a rough guide.

People who have a bulky look may not be obese if their weight is within the recommended range for their height. The BMI should be calculated regularly to find out whether your body is changing or not. Remember this is not an exact science just a rough guide to help you keep your weight in check.

One of the main causes of being obese is irregular eating habit. Children and adolescents tend to eat anything that comes their way when they are out, if they have poor eating habits. Eating junk foods adds excess calories as fat. This accumulates in time and leads to obesity. They may not know how to select the food that has good value and nutrition. Moreover they are not aware of the consequences of being overweight. Education starts first with children in helping them identify good eating habits.

Tracking your eating habits and working style would indicate the causes of being obese. People having sedentary life styles are likely to become obese. Do not eat snacks that are considered as junk food. This would only increase your weight in time. A carefully planned diet can help you reduce your weight that is caused due to accumulation of fat. If you can combine a good natural food diet with a regular exercise program you will then be on your way to reduce your weight and return to normal weight levels.

A natural diet is one that consumes fruit and vegetables for about 80% of your caloric intake the balance is good fats like olive oil and protein. Protein does not have to be animal based. Eating vegetable protein in the correct amounts is just as or healthier for you in the long run. Combine that diet with a good fast paced walk everyday and a commitment to drink more water. Your fat will melt off quickly and you will be a lot happier.

Keep checking your weight frequently and follow a proper diet. You can do some simple aerobic exercises like walking, swimming, and jogging that help you to reduce your weight considerably slowly. A great place to start is with a good weight loss system that helps you understand the proper diet, proper exercise and the proper mental attitude to lose weight.
