It is official, ankle weights are no longer for elderly ladies or obese people. Ankle weights do indeed have many uses and can be applied to great benefit. Ankle weights are good for treating injuries and building up resistance to certain bodyparts and for general fitness. We explore each topic in detail next.

Ankle weights are great for injury treatment. Obviously the ankle is an area which can get injured very easily and very quickly. Just take a look at the ankle and you can see how vulnerable the area looks, yet of course this small section of your body is integral for balance and for using your legs day to day. From minor to major injuries, ankle weights can be of great assistance and if used properly with good form can greatly assist any recovery plan.

Ankle weights can also be used for building resistance to certain bodyparts, mainly used for your abs, your legs and your back. In respect of your abs you can scour the internet for a whole range of exercises. The main exercises employed are normally crunches and leg raises. Many people find many sets of crunches will provide great results whilst the vast majority of people will use low sets of leg raises as these tend to be harder to perform. Concentrating on your back, the most commonly employed exercise is a hyper extension, this method with a leg movement is difficult and with added resistance on the ankle this can be of great benefit. The final common use is to perform certain leg movements, again if done correctly leg movements can build up good tone all around the different muscle groups incorporated in your legs.

The final method employed for ankle weights is for the reason of fitness. It is ever so common now for runners to use ankle weights to build up extra resistance to your heart and lungs. Obviously extra weight added to your body in turn makes your body heavier and therefore challenges your internal organs a lot more.

As you can see, using ankle weights for various types of exercises is very beneficial indeed. Not only can you strengthen up your mid section by doing weighted ab routines, you can also use the weights for fitness etc too. There is no doubting that ankle weights and hand weights for that matter are one of the most versatile pieces of equipment you can buy and at a very reasonable price too. Consider investing in some even if you do not have time to use them properly walking or running because you could use these weighted devices when doing housework round the house.
