In the 1990s, a drug being tested for the treatment of angina was found to have the side effect of increasing the blood flow to the penis. When the medication proved to be ineffective in treating angina further studies were done and in 1998 Viagra was approved by the FDA for use as a treatment of erectile dysfunction. ED is a condition that is common among men over 40 although there is a growing group of younger men also developing the problem.
Viagra was developed and is marketed by Pfizer Corporation, one of the most highly respected pharmaceutical companies in the world. It has become extremely popular among men in recent years to the point that sales are topping one billion dollars annually Millions of men have found that it is a safe and effective way to treat their ED. Recently there have been more and more questions about whether Viagra can also be effective in women.
The fact is that a decrease in blood flow to the genital area can also occur in women and decreases their sexual desire. There have been several preliminary studies that have indicated the Viagra can help with this problem. However, the FDA has not approved Viagra for use by women, but doctors can prescribe it for their female patients. It is estimated that over 150,000 women have received prescriptions for Viagra.
The problem is that while the decrease in blood flow to the genitals in women may be caused by similar factors to those in men such as high blood pressure and diabetes there may be additional causes which Viagra may not be effective in alleviating. There is also the question of what additional side effects if any that the use of Viagra may cause in female patients.
For example, while it obviously won’t cause a penal erection lasting more then four hours there could be other concerns. These and other possible health risks are all being studied right now. If these studies prove that Viagra is safe and effective for female patients and its use is approved by the FDA then sales are expected to skyrocket.
Of course, women who use Viagra must take the same precautions as men. Women should consult with their doctors before taking Viagra so that there overall health may be assessed. There may be certain health issues involved that will keep a woman from using Viagra, as is the case with men. There also may be certain drugs being used for the treatment of other problems that Viagra can’t be taken with.
Viagra is only available by prescription and women should not fall prey to the websites that offer a much cheaper generic version of Viagra. There is no FDA approved generic version of Viagra and what is being offered is fake Viagra. While some of these fakes may contain some of the ingredients in the real Viagra, they may not be properly combined. These drugs are ineffective and can sometimes contain dangerous ingredients.
The same is true of the counterfeit Viagra that is made with the same blue color and diamond shaped design as the real thing and offered as Viagra. These pills aren’t made with any of the ingredients in Viagra and will often contain chemicals that are highly hazardous to people’s health.
There are legitimate online pharmacies where women can fill their prescriptions for Viagra at a reduced price. These are licensed and have only licensed physicians and pharmacists on their staffs. They offer the real Viagra and do not try to pass off something else as a generic equivalent.
