Almost every man in the world has heard of the magic little blue diamond shaped pill called Viagra that is used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Since it was first developed by Pfizer Corporation in 1990, it has proven to be safe and highly effective and sales continue to top the one billion dollar mark every year. However, not everyone who uses Viagra or is considering its use knows everything they need to know about it.
To begin with, many people don’t know how Viagra works. Erectile dysfunction is primarily the result of a lack of blood flow to the penis. This is what was discovered about Viagra when it was originally being developed for use as a medication to treat angina. It didn’t work for angina, but it did increase the blood going to the penis and helped men with ED.
Second, Viagra does not treat the underlying causes of ED such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol. Nor does it treat diabetes of hardening of the arteries that can also cause ED. What it does is simply treat one of the symptoms, which is ED.
Third, Viagra is only available by prescription and so before taking Viagra men need to consult with their physicians. The doctor will decide if a man is healthy enough to engage in sexual activity and if Viagra will probably be effective in treating the ED. Certain health problems may keep men from being able to take Viagra.
Fourth, the amount of Viagra needed to be effective is not the same for everyone. Viagra comes in 25-mg, 50-mg, and 100-mg tablets. A physician should determine which dose to start a patient off with. Age or health factors may help determine this. For example, older men with kidney or liver problems will probably be given the lowest dose initially. The dose can be adjusted if it is ineffective, but only a doctor should decide when to make the adjustment and what the new dosage should be.
Fifth, Viagra does have the possibility of side effects. These range from relatively minor short lasting effects like facial flushing, headaches, and nausea to more sever side effects like an erection lasting in excess of four hours. This type of erection can occur with any medication designed to treat ED, but it is very rare. If it does occur medical help should be sought immediately. Other possible rare, but potentially serious side effects that may be caused by Viagra are loss of hearing or vision.
Sixth, there is no clinical evidence that Viagra is helpful to women with loss of sexual desire or function. There are women who claim it has helped however and some doctors are prescribing it for female patients so the matter is still being studied.
Seventh, Viagra is expensive but there are ways to save money. Online pharmacies often have very reasonable prices on Viagra and provide the convenience of fast home delivery. However, it is important for men to make sure they are dealing with a reputable online drugstore that has licensed physicians and pharmacists associated with it. Otherwise, there is the risk not only of poor service but receiving something other then the real Viagra.
Eighth, there are no proven effective generic alternatives to Viagra even though there are hundreds of websites that claim to offer them. Some of these generic drugs may contain ingredients similar to those in Viagra, but not in the proper mixture. Thus, the medication will probably be ineffective.
Ninth, there are also counterfeit drugs on the market that look like the real Viagra, but are in fact manufactured using ingredients that not only don’t treat erectile dysfunction but may be health hazards. If websites are offering Viagra at greatly reduced prices and are not asking for a prescription then there is a good chance that they are selling counterfeit Viagra.
Tenth, Viagra is not to be taken as a recreational drug. It is designed for one specific purpose, the treatment of ED. It is known to interact badly with such medications as beta blockers used to treat chest pains and can cause a sudden and fatal drop in blood pressure. Adverse reactions are quite possible when Viagra is used in conjunction with illegal drugs like Ecstasy.
