Countless members of the various churches lapsed into hypocrisy and often into despair. Marriages were sent asunder as partners could not agree on the degree of subservience to which they needed to submit. Occasional erotic stories, hidden as they often were, allowed for short escapes outside the oppression of the day to day curriculum. But the oppression persisted for many years.
